Creation & Purpose:
Created by Lysander Saint for Lynessa de Grey shortly after she discovered her husband Theodore's affair. The ring was both an apology and insurance, Saint's way of ensuring she would never be deceived again. The blue sapphire was specifically chosen to match Saint's eye color, a possessive and sentimental touch.
How It Works:
Detection Method:
- Responds to deliberate, conscious lies spoken within 15-20 feet of the wearer
- The sapphire warms against the finger—gentle heat for small lies, uncomfortable (but not burning) heat for major deceptions
- Works on lies of commission and deliberate omission (if the speaker is actively trying to mislead)
What It DOES Detect:
- Spoken lies the speaker knows are false
- Deliberate deceptions and misdirection
- False statements made with intent to mislead
What It DOESN'T Detect:
- Lies outside the 15-20 foot range
- Written lies (only responds to spoken words)
- Self-deception (if someone genuinely believes their own lie, it won't trigger)
- Obvious sarcasm or jokes (reads intent, not just words)
- Lies in languages the wearer doesn't speak (works best when wearer comprehends the words)
Limitations:
- Always active—cannot be turned off
- Multiple liars in range create layered warmth (can be overwhelming)
- Can only be removed by the person wearing it (magically bound to prevent theft/loss)
- Wearer develops directional sense over time (can tell which person is lying in a crowd)
